In a surprising move, Ross Levinsohn, the CEO of The Arena Group, which oversees Sports Illustrated, has been fired following recent turmoil surrounding AI-generated articles. The company cited the decision as part of an effort to enhance company operations and revenue, emphasizing that the change is aimed at bettering the organization’s overall functioning.
This significant shakeup in leadership follows a series of dismissals of high-ranking executives within the company after allegations arose regarding AI-generated content being published by Sports Illustrated. Manoj Bhargava, known for his involvement with the popular 5-Hour Energy drink, has been appointed as the new CEO.
However, a representative for Mr. Bhargava clarified that Levinsohn’s dismissal is unrelated to the AI article issue. Insisting that the move is part of ongoing efforts to improve the company’s performance, they emphasized its separateness from the controversy.
This development unfolded after the firing of three key executives last week, including chief operating officer Andrew Kraft, media president Rob Barrett, and corporate counsel Julie Fenster, contributing to the company’s larger executive restructuring.
A month earlier, Futurism, a tech news outlet, revealed that Sports Illustrated had published articles attributed to fictitious authors, accompanied by AI-generated images. Despite the magazine’s removal of the content, it contested the accuracy of the report while initiating an internal investigation into the matter.
The articles in question were licensed from a third-party entity, Advon Commerce, according to a statement by a spokesperson for Arena Group. Advon Commerce, an e-commerce company working with retailers and publishers, reportedly provided assurances that human writers had composed and edited all the disputed articles. The firm purportedly employs anti-plagiarism and anti-AI tools regularly as part of its content generation process.
The Arena Group clarified that pseudonyms were allowed for certain articles to safeguard the writers’ privacy, addressing concerns regarding the use of fake names within the published content.
The controversy surrounding AI-generated content and the subsequent shakeup in executive leadership at The Arena Group continues to unfold, raising questions about the integrity of content creation and the evolving landscape of media publishing.
