What is an Electric Lift Chair?

Simply put, an electric lift chair is a recliner with a motor and a lifting mechanism. The aim is to assist the user in sitting down or standing up. It happens when the motor on the chair uses the lift mechanism to rise and guide the user into or out of the chair.

The addition of the recliner feature allows people with mobility issues to sit, or even sleep, in a reclined position for added comfort. Electric lift chairs provide soft, comfortable seating, and their ergonomically designed features work well to reduce the pressure exerted on muscles and ligaments when an individual sits in an uncomfortable chair. This type of chair also makes it possible for users to sit down or get up without needing anyone to pick them up.

Many Features to Consider

A huge advantage of lift chairs is that there is an extensive range of options on the market. Chairs are available in all shapes and sizes and with so many varying features that finding the perfect option is easier than you think. Here’s our list of what to look for as you start the shopping process.

1. Assess How Much Space You Have Available

Before you even start looking at designs and colours, you should establish where the chair is going to be placed. This is essential because electric lift chairs need clearance behind them to comfortably perform the reclining function. Keep in mind that the chair also needs to lift and ease the user out.

Ideally, you don’t want a small out-of-the-way corner, but it should be at least 15cm from a wall. This clearance requirement may increase if you’re choosing a bulky recliner. If the user moves from the chair to a wheelchair or walker, you may have to consider space for this in front of the chair. Essentially, it could be the difference between getting a bulky chair or a more streamlined model.

2. Size of the Intended User

Not all lift chairs have the same seat or backrest size. You will have to consider it to ensure the user is comfortable. Important size aspects to consider include the following:

  • Seat widths (especially for larger people)
  • Backrest heights (for tall people)
  • Seat depths (relevant for people with back issues)

If possible, the person for whom the chair is intended should visit the retailer’s showroom to test the comfort of the chair. In instances where it isn’t possible, be sure to take accurate measurements of the person to compare to the dimensions provided by the supplier.

3. Decide Whether You Need a Single or Dual Motor

You may not think that it matters what type of motor your chair has, but whether you opt for a single or dual option can significantly affect comfort levels. Here’s how they compare:

  • Single motor: These chairs have two basic functions, namely, “up” and “down”. With this, you can recline without lifting your legs. This choice is usually preferred for people who suffer from dementia, Alzheimer’s, or poor cognitive ability.
  • Dual motor: With this option, the backrest and the footrest can be adjusted independently of each other. Here, the handset has six controls to adjust various reclining and seating positions.

4. Consider Comfort Levels

If you’re buying a lift chair, it’s essential to opt for the most comfortable option in your budget. Different models offer varying degrees of comfort for seating and reclining. It’s essential to know what kind of support the user needs and then assess the specifications and features of your preferred options.

5. Determine a Budget

Electric lift chairs can vary from $1000 upwards. The amount you end up paying will depend on the size, style, selected material, and the required features. Establishing a budget will make choosing simple features such as material and size a lot easier.

It’s always a good idea to focus on the ergonomic features rather than the colour or style. Fortunately, many suppliers offer custom design options, which means it’s super easy to get a chair that ticks all your boxes. Be sure to consider how the chosen material needs to be cleaned and maintained, as this may also affect your overall decision.

Final Thought

Finding the perfect electric lift chair doesn’t have to be daunting. By combining our suggested tips with your comfort requirements, you will easily be able to find the chair best suited to your space, budget, and mobility needs. Customizable options will go a long way toward ensuring you find the perfect chair.
