In a recent turn of events, tech giant Apple has agreed to shell out a hefty $25 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of misleading users about sharing app subscriptions within their Family Sharing groups. While Apple maintains its innocence, the settlement provides potential compensation for affected users who found themselves on the wrong side of the tech behemoth’s subscription policies.
The lawsuit, initiated in 2019 and battled out in the Superior Court of California, alleged that Apple falsely assured users that any app subscription could be shared among family members. Users claimed they were duped into purchasing subscriptions that, in reality, couldn’t be shared within their Family Sharing groups, resulting in financial losses.
Despite denying any wrongdoing, Apple opted for a $25 million settlement instead of risking a costly legal showdown. The company’s decision opens the door for affected users to claim a slice of the settlement pie.
Who’s Eligible for Compensation?
According to the terms outlined in the lawsuit settlement, eligible parties include individuals who:
- Initiated a subscription purchase for a non-Apple app through the Apple App Store.
- Were part of a Family Sharing group with at least one other member between June 21, 2015, and January 30, 2019.
- Resided in the United States during the aforementioned period.
