How to Look After Your Upholstered Couch

While leather couches and chairs can always look impressive, sometimes they aren’t as comfortable to sit on as upholstered furnishings, especially on a hot day when you can start to stick to the leather! Upholstered couches are comfortable and look great, which is why they are such a popular choice with shoppers. However, if you want your couch to stay fresh and looking good, you’ll need to do the following to make sure you’re taking care of it.

Use a Protective Throw

Although you might want to show off your couch, using a throw will do a lot to help keep it clean and looking good. These are particularly useful for households with children, as they will help reduce sticky hands and spills getting directly onto the fabric of your couch, and these throws are much easier to clean. They can also look great from a décor perspective if you get a throw with a nice pattern or one that is beautifully woven.

Get It Cleaned

Keeping your couch clean by doing some light vacuuming to pick up any dirt that might have fallen under the cushion, etc., is always worth doing. You might even be able to wash your couch covers in your washing machine as well. However, for upholstered couches that can’t have the fabric removed, you should look up your local upholstery cleaning services and get a professional in to do the job.

Try to Avoid Direct Sunlight

This might not always be possible, but where you can try to position your upholstered couch or armchair out of direct sunlight. This is because the light can fade the color of the fabric, leaving it looking less vibrant as the years go on. Although this might happen eventually anyway, the sunlight will speed up this process. The same is true for any rugs that you might have in your home. You can always use voile curtains or blinds to filter the sunlight and protect the fabric.

Don’t Drag Your Sofa Around

Whether you need to move it to do some cleaning, or you have decided to reposition your couch, never drag it across the floor. Not only will this damage your flooring, but it can also risk damaging the frame of the couch as well, or risk tearing some of the fabric. Get someone else to help you do this, but always move your couch by lifting it from the base. You should also avoid sitting on the armrests, as this will put pressure on the frame in the wrong place.

Puff Up Your Cushions

You sit on your couch whenever you’re watching the TV, reading a book, or just talking to your guests as you all hang out together in the living room. After a while, your couch cushions will lose their shape and start to sag. This can make your couch feel uncomfortable, so puffing up your couch pillows regularly to help them keep their shape is key.

If you want to look after your upholstered couch, follow the tips above to keep it looking good and feeling comfortable for longer.
