Outside Noise Keeping You Awake

For light sleepers, noise is often one of the biggest obstacles to a good night’s sleep, especially when outside noise is to blame. Asking other members of your household to turn down the TV volume is one thing. But it’s not so easy to stop your neighbor’s baby from crying or sleep through the constant stream of traffic outside your bedroom window.

Luckily, we’re here to help. Keep reading to find out how to block noise from outside.

Try Earplugs

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to block outside noise is to try using earplugs when you go to bed at night. Getting the fit right can be trial and error but we’d recommend going with a trusted brand rather than whatever you can find at the drugstore. Some top brands to check out online include Moldex, 3M, Hearoes, and Ear Buddy.

Cancel Out the Noise

Wondering how to cancel noise from outside? While it might sound counterintuitive, one of the best ways is to block noise with noise. No, we’re not suggesting you start a noise war with your neighbors. We mean using a white noise machine, noise-canceling headphones, or a fan to help you sleep.

Many people find drifting off to the whirring motor of a fan or the soft sounds of rainforest recordings a lot easier than trying to sleep through traffic sounds and neighborhood parties. But before you buy any new equipment, try your regular headphones and a free smartphone app to see if this method works for you.

Reinforce Your Bedroom Windows

When researching how to soundproof a room from outside noise, you’ll likely come across a lot of homemade options that rarely work. Instead of wasting your time and money on DIY experiments, you should invest in reinforced windows designed to block outside noise.

Even if you only want to replace your bedroom windows, you can order custom-made windows from Renewal by Andersen near me that match the rest of your home for a more consistent look.

Hang Noise-Absorbing Curtains

Another way to block outside noise from getting in through your windows is to hang heavy curtains. While any thick curtains will do the trick, you can buy special noise-absorbing curtains. As a bonus, they also block out light so you can look forward to a good night’s sleep and a nice long lie-in.

Rearrange Your Furniture

Want to know how to reduce noise from outside without buying anything new? Try rearranging your furniture.

Thanks to their insulating fabric contents, moving closets, clothing racks, and drawers full of bed linen to an exterior wall can help block noise. Books are also excellent noise-absorbers, so if it’s easier, you could try moving your bookshelves to the outside wall of your bedroom instead.

Stop Outside Noise From Keeping You Awake

Although there’s little we can do to stop outside noise, there are several ways to stop it keeping you up at night.

From experimenting with earplugs to soundproofing your bedroom, it might take some time to find the right solution for you, but that first night of uninterrupted sleep will confirm that it was all worth it.  If you found this article helpful, you’ll love our other lifestyle posts.
