Are you here to find out about uterine fibroid treatments? At USA Fibroid Center, we offer minimally invasive uterine fibroid treatment to our patients. For fibroid treatment, you should first understand what fibroid is.
Understanding uterine fibroid treatments
Uterine fibroids, also called fibromyomas or leiomyomas, are benign tumors originating from the uterus’s smooth muscle tissue (the myometrium). They consist of a soft muscle component and a fibrous-connective component and appear as nodular growths. The dimensions can range from a few millimetres to several centimeters (10-15 cm) and even cover the uterus in the most severe cases.
Uterine fibroids can be single or, in most cases, multiple (clustered); they generally have a relatively slow evolution, while rapid growth is less frequent. There is no characteristic site of the onset of uterine fibroids. However, in 95% of cases, the beginning is in the uterine body. Thus, one should immediately request a diagnosis and a proper treatment.
Classification of uterine fibroids
In any fibroid treatment, depending on the affected uterine layer and the direction in which they develop can be distinguished in:
Subserosis
These are the most common and develop towards the outer surface of the uterus and generally do not cause discomfort. However, they can become huge (and make the womb appear larger on one side). In some cases, subserous fibroids are attached to the uterus by a thin cord, which gives them the name pedunculated fibroids, with a characteristic mushroom-shaped appearance.
Intramural or interstitial
They develop in the thickness of the uterus wall, causing an increase in volume. These most common fibroids tend to enlarge and stretch the uterus. Therefore, request uterine fibroid treatment instantly!
Submucosal or intracavitary
These are the least common and most problematic, as they develop under the lining of the uterus, towards the endometrium, sometimes protruding into the uterine cavity. In some cases, such as subserous fibroids, they are attached to the uterus by a stalk. Occasionally, fibroids may also be present in the fallopian tubes, cervix and uterine ligament. Hence, uterine fibroid treatments can be established at the same time.
What kind of fibroid treatment to ask for?
Uterine fibroids are the most frequent benign neoplasm; the incidence, probably underestimated, reaches up to 70% in women between 30 and 50. However, uterine fibroids are more common in women of Afro-Caribbean descent than in white women and those with a high body mass index (because being overweight or obese increases estrogen levels).
In over 99% of cases, fibroids are non-cancerous and do not predispose you to an increased risk of uterine cancer. In any case, a fibroid treatment can save a life!
Uterine fibroid treatment at the USA Fibroid Center
1. Physical examination
The pelvic exam may reveal a dilated, mobile, irregular, and palpable uterus
2. Ultrasound
A pelvic ultrasound can be performed for uterine fibroid treatment, which helps clarify the location, number and volume of the fibroids present, even if transvaginal ultrasound better defines the morphology of the fibroids. However, the latter is not recommended in large-calibre fibroids since the probe cannot reach all uterus areas hidden by the fibroid.
3. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans
This allows you to evaluate the possible involvement of cells in the myometrium and vaginal stroma through more detailed images of the uterus. It also allows more precise localization of fibroids, their number or size. It is often used in perimenopausal women and those with larger uteruses.
Prevention
Since the causes underlying the development of uterine fibroids are not yet known, and an important role is believed to be played by genetic predisposition. There are no methods of prevention to avoid the appearance of fibroids.
However, to reduce the risk of its onset, it is good practice to adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising regular physical activity, avoiding smoking, maintaining an average weight and respecting an adequate diet. In the already established presence of fibroids, it is necessary to carry out treatments at the USA Fibroid Center.
