Quidditch is a popular game in the world of wizards. This game is inspired by none other than J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The way in which Rowing created a fictional game in her series is the same way upon which Quidditch is based.

The players fly on broomsticks and try to score points with four types of balls, namely, a quaffle, two bludgers, and a golden snitch. But a thing that Quidditch fans want to know sometimes is the fact that which ball is the largest of them all?

In this article, we will try to solve the doubts of players who are interested in playing Quidditch, and we will dive deep into finding out which ball is the largest in the game. For the same reason, we will talk about each ball type one by one so that we can analyze and find out in a well-to-do manner about the largest ball of the popular game.

The first type of Ball is a Quaffle

Quaffle is the first and primary ball in quidditch. It is the only ball that can be used to score goals in the game. The ball appears red in color, and it is covered in leather. The diameter of the ball is 12 inches; it can be said that a quaffle is slightly smaller than a muggle football. The quaffle falls slowly when it is dropped, and time is given to chasers to catch the ball mid-air. Chasers are the people who pass and carry the ball. The chasers try to throw it and pass it through the three hoops that are present at the opposite end of the pitch. Each throw is worth 10 points in the game. Now that we know about chasers, there are keepers in the game as well. These keepers are present to protect the ball from getting into hoops so that the chasers do not gain points.

The Quaffle was introduced in Quidditch at an early stage of the game. It was placed at Queerditch Marsh in the 11th century. In 1711, Quaffle was changed to the form it is today. Shortly after, Daisy Pennifold invented our much-known quaffle that we know today.

The second type of ball is a bruiser

The bludgers are two in number in the game. These balls are jet black in color, and their diameter is 10 inches. These balls are slightly smaller than the bludgers. Their work is to knock off the players flying on their brooms. They knock off the beaters, where beaters are the players who use bats made of wood to hit bludgers to push their teammates away from their opponents. These beaters are strong, but they face constant threats from bludgers.

When the bludgers originated, their work was to charm rocks to fly at players that were run by mischievous spectators, but later these rocks were replaced by balls made of metal. These balls were made to attack anything that was movable. Those movable balls were dangerous because they were responsible for killing players. It was the year 1885 when these dangerous metal balls were finally converted into cushioning charms whose work was to only target players.

The third type of ball is the golden snitch

The Golden Snitch is the smallest ball in Quidditch and yet the most important. The golden snitch is a walnut-sized ball that is golden in color and has silver wings. Its work is to fly around the pitch of the game at high speed. It sometimes hovers and pauses on the pitch. This ball is hard to catch because of its speed and its size as well. It is a seeker who tries to catch the Golden Snitch. Catching a snitch fetches whooping points of 150 in number. The seeker has to be fast in order to catch the snitch and must avoid bludgers and other players in the game.

The Golden Snitch was not a ball in the initial days, but it was a bird whose name was Golden Snidget. The credit goes to Bowman Wright, who invented the Golden Snitch in order to replace Golden Snidgets and make them the most powerful balls in Quidditch.
