Natural, Cultured, and Fake Pearls

Natural pearls develop in the mantle tissue, or body, of some mollusks, usually in the vicinity of a microscopic irritant, and always without any assistance from humans. Cultured pearls require care and attention from humans in order to grow. While some wild mollusks are still collected and used, most mollusks used in the culturing process today are raised expressly for that purpose.

Fake pearls are often known as man-made or imitation pearls. They should not be confused with cultured pearls, which are genuine pearls produced by hand. Mollusc shells, plastic, and glass can be used to make imitation pearls. Alternatively, some plastic beads can be made to resemble the iridescence of mother-of-pearl or nacre by coating them with a pearlescent material.

Note: Since imitation pearls are fake pearls, they do not provide the astrological benefits that natural pearls do. This is the main reason why people who wear pearls claim they do not experience the benefits of the Moti gemstone.
