Ari Aster’s latest horror masterpiece, Beau Is Afraid, has already made its mark on audiences with its stunning visuals and gripping performances. It follows in the footsteps of Aster’s previous hits, The Devil’s Legacy (Hereditary) and Midsommar: Terror Does Not Wait For The Night. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Patti LuPone, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Michael Gandolfini, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Richard Kind.
As with Aster’s previous works, this film is full of captivating and spine-tingling scenes. In the film’s final stretch, Beau, played by Joaquin Phoenix, arrives too late to attend his mother’s beheaded funeral. He then reunited with his childhood love, Elaine, played by Parker Posey. The two share a somewhat awkward reunion that ends in a sex scene. Interestingly, just as they are about to make love, Elaine plays Mariah Carey’s 1995 hit, “Always Be My Baby.”

Beau Is Afraid’s needle drop arrives in the third act, once you’ve started to feel like you’ve seen it all — suicide by paint-chugging, an elaborately executed play-within-a-play, a completely nude homicidal maniac. And then comes a sex scene. It’s a surprising turn of events, given the main character’s whole deal. But it’s not just that. A song underscored the scene that would take anyone 10,000 tries to guess correctly with the movie playing on mute. That song is Mariah Carey’s 1996 chart-topper “Always Be My Baby.”

In the film’s third act, Beau Wasserman (Phoenix) finally makes it back to the home of his mother, Mona (Patti LuPone). He’s late for her funeral. But to his pleasure, the pathetic protagonist met with his long-lost love, Elaine (Parker Posey). After an awkward but tender re-introduction on the porch, the pair end up in bed, where Beau loses his virginity to Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby,” a song Elaine plays from her phone.
Because of a fear instilled in him by his mother, Beau convinced herself that his orgasm will cause his death. However, he climaxes and lives. Elaine, on the other hand, is not so lucky. When she orgasms, she dies, and her body freezes in a place like a statue. From there, she was knocked off the bed, and even carried out of the room, never moving another muscle.

Parker Posey was crucial for Beau Is Afraid’s climax.
While Posey’s role in the film is full of macabre humour, sex, and death, she also brings a jolting vulnerability to Beau’s Afraid. After the eponymous hero’s many run-ins with violent forces, this reprieve stands out, and Phoenix and Aster were quick to credit Posey for that.
Aster concurred, offering, “Parker Posey is so amazing in this film. I’m just so in love with what she does here — especially so on the porch. What she does in [that] sex scene is so courageous. And I just love her forever for what she does in this movie. She’s the best.”
