Lil Nas, whose real name is Monero Lamar Hill, has issued a quick mea culpa for offending the trans community after he cracked a “not so funny” joke about transition surgery. On Tuesday (March. 14), the “Old Town Road” rapper shared a photo of a woman resembling him, with a caption: “The surgery was a success.”
Not only this but the rapper engaged with some commentary via snark and admitted that he was angry. One follower asked him why he had to mention surgery. He responded, “Because [the woman photographed] has titties? Are you dense?”
Lil Nas X Apologises for Trans ‘Joke’ After Backlash
Lil Nas X apologised Tuesday for making a joke on social media about trans-affirming surgery. Also then getting annoyed when they called him out for it. It started when the star—who is openly gay and has supported trans causes.
He tweeted a photo of a woman who resembled him with the comment: “The surgery was a success,” the Daily News reports. When commenters objected, he tweeted that it was a joke, adding, “y’all cannot be f—in serious”. But the “Old Town Road” rapper later had second thoughts, posting a mea culpa: “apologies to the trans community I def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. much love to you guys. sorry.”
How Are Fans Reacting To The Apology?
After the incident, Lil Nas finally came forward with an apology and wrote: “Apologies to the trans community. I def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. Much love to you guys. Sorry.” While many fans thought he didn’t have anything to be sorry about, most felt that the apology wasn’t enough.
A Black trans artist tweeted, “Baby, this apology ain’t it! You need to apologise to the trans community in material ways that include money. As sharing your platform to raise awareness … This is fake as hell!” In retaliation, Lil Nas X then quoted her tweet, writing, “girl eat my ass.”
Lil Nas’s fans, however, came to his defence on the trans artist’s tweet. One wrote, “hi trans person here! there wasn’t even anything 2 apologise for to begin w some of y’all must be a little too soft or something.” One mentioned, “No it is never fake to give material apologies to marginalised communities that you are using when you’re a celebrity.”
Another wrote, “But just throwing money at the situation wouldn’t be fake? If anything that would be worse. He already apologised and has always advocated for trans rights. He dedicated his album to them”. Lil Nas X’s comments came shortly before Transgender Day of Visibility. Which honours the community annually on March 31.
