What Prevents Change Management?
Given the present condition of the business market, we know that change is the only way to survive. In fact, change management deals exactly with this. However, in spite of knowing this, most of us avoid making changes. The reason behind this remains a mystery.
However, recently, Barry Moltz sat down with Shawn Hessinger, the Executive Editor for Small Biz Trends to discuss everything about change management. Moltz wrote a book titled Change Masters which had the subtitle “How to Make the Changes You Already Know You Need to Make”. In fact, this is where Shawn begins his questions. He asks Barry that if the small businesses really know what they need to change, then why do they delay. To this, Barry answers that he wrote the book as many people asked him to help them with the change.
However, he added that even after his advice, nothing changed. Barry Moltz adds that the main reason behind this is that our brain is ‘a pattern-making machine’. Therefore, it compels us to do those things which we have already done for survival. He further added that we become lazy as we grow old. Therefore, we do not want to learn anything outside whatever we have already learned. This according to him is the main problem in change management.
Barry argued that any change brings in something new to us. In fact, something new is also unknown and may also bring about chaos. So, small businesses do not want to change. Moreover, he added that people only change when they are in extreme pain. Otherwise, they do not.
The Process of Change Management
The next area that Shawn focused on during the interview, is the process of change management. To this, Barry Moltz primarily issued a warning to the businessmen. He said that in small businesses, one should not make too many changes at one time. Therefore, it is important to make changes wisely.
Barry then goes on to suggest that the owners should start caring about their employees. In fact, this according to him is the biggest change that needs to be made. Another important change accordion to him is that owners should pay their employees well enough. The payment should be in tune with the inflation rate.
Shawn then asked Barry Moltz about the kinds of changes and the steps involved in them. To this Barry suggests that at the end of his book Change Masters he has provided a change worksheet. It contains 20 steps which must be followed in change management. Regarding the important changes that companies have to make, Barry suggests that they need to widen their prospect pipeline.
Barry suggests that most companies suffer from ‘the double helix trap’. This disturbs the balance between marketing and executing the business. This is what most companies need to fix.
He also claimed that small businesses have to articulate the things that they want to change. Moreover, Barry Moltz added that if we do not have an internal motivation then we do not change. Therefore, Barry’s change management involves very small steps and it starts with one recognising the urge to change. If small businesses do not opt for change management then they would not be able to survive.
