Dead Space was put into hypersleep for over a decade but has now been brought back to life. This game is an authentic recreation of Dead Space (2008), featuring the same story but with updated graphics and gameplay mechanics.
Recreating Dead Space from scratch is a challenging undertaking. EA not only tackled the challenge head-on but also found unexpected success.
One of the most spectacular and thrilling modern horror experiences we have ever experienced, Dead Space 2023 is a familiar yet new return to the original, graphically and mechanically honing the aspects that made the 2008 game outstanding.
Like the first game, Dead Space is a sci-fi survival horror experience combining elements from games like Resident Evil 4 with a setting that might be lifted from an Alien film.
In terms of ambiance, Dead Space is relentlessly terrifying; you’ll spend the whole game wondering if some hideous monster will spring out of the shadows and attack you at any moment. For the simple reason that something usually does.
The Combination of Familiar and Exotic
The game shines when it comes to its mood. The USG Ishimura is a foreboding, disturbing place full of hideous, deadly Necromorphs. In this case, the Ishimura and Necromorphs steal the show.
The ship’s layout is very similar to the original. Yet, this decrepit old mining vessel manages to wring every last drop of terror from its maze of hallways and shadowed compartments. As a result of its corrosion and degradation, it must be decommissioned immediately.
The Ishimura is a metaphor for the game’s protagonists, their tumultuous life, and their inevitable end. The spacecraft, like the Nostromo in Ridley Scott’s Alien, is more than simply a background; it’s an integral part of the story.
Notable also is the sound design, which aids in creating a tense and atmospheric setting through various sound effects. The music and sound effects in the game are expertly made, and they greatly improve the overall quality of the experience.
Key Differences from The Original Game
While the reimagined Dead Space features several improvements over the original, the most noticeable one concerns the protagonist, Isaac, and has nothing to do with the plot or characters.
Isaac, the game’s mute protagonist, stood in for the player in many respects in the original. Although Isaac was initially unvoiced, he received a speaking role and expanded characterization in the sequels.
This alteration was incorporated into the remake, giving Isaac a voice actor and the player a window into his mind during the quest.
This great improvement will help EA connect the remake to the original games and any potential successors.
With a clearer understanding of Dead Space’s backstory, the developers are free to explore a variety of paths for the franchise’s gloomy future.
Death is Merely The Start
In 2008, when Dead Space first came out, it breathed new life into a genre that had become stale. Oversaturation of the genre and the shift in focus of popular franchises toward action led to a decline in the popularity of horror films.
EA and Visceral Games stepped in and completely revamped the horror genre, giving us something fresh and terrible to play.
The 2023 remake of Dead Space is excellent and improves upon every aspect of the 2008 original. Some of the game’s flaws were removed entirely, turning Dead Space into an absolute must-play for horror fans.
