Although Bungie’s popular 1st shooter, Destiny, began in 2014 and is already approaching the end of its first full decade, popularity has never been welcomed.
Thousands of Guardians are attacking Neomuna in the first few hours of the Lightfall era, and Destiny 2 has already smashed its all-time PC player count record. There is an increase in interest with every new expansion, and Lightfall has shown to be the biggest so far.
The game has had peaks and falls since Destiny 2 launched on Steam in 2019 in parallel with each significant feature release. Because of Savathun’s introduction in the Witch Queen update, early 2022 was the franchise’s most successful month on PC up until this point.
To mark the debut, 289,000 players simultaneously entered. The approaching threats faced by The Witness in the Lightfall expansion have now overshadowed her presence.
On February 28, simply hours after the gates were opened, Destiny 2’s player count reached a new all-time high, at least on PC. At the time of writing, there were over 316,000 Guardians registered, and that number only one on the initial day.
It’s important to keep in mind that this number only includes Destiny 2 gamers that have Steam accounts:
Even while it’s a new record for the platform, BattleNet participation on PC may have been higher before the changeover. We can’t predict whether the release of Lightfall will be a genuinely historic day for all video games at this time because we can’t currently measure interest in consoles.
Yet if the trend on Steam is to be believed, more players are registering today than with any recent expansion. With a peak of 173,000, almost all earlier today, Destiny 2 has been in the top five most popular categories on Twitch alone since Lightfall went live. There has been a significant increase in spectators along with this rise in player participation.
How will the expansion proceed from here? But given the approaching Root of Nightmare Raid and the unavoidable publicity surrounding the day one Raid race, attention will undoubtedly continue over the next few days.
Fresh events for Destiny 2

New seasonal events are also a result of a new Destiny 2 expansion. Players can also pay $10 to play seasonal stories for the next three months if they want to spend less than $40 to play the major expansion.
Beyond the new Strand capability, Bungie has highlighted Lightfall’s significance as the story’s final chapter. It started with the first Destiny in 2014.
