Factors to Look For in a Good Sunscreen

Sunscreen is important to sustain healthy skin in the long run since it guards the skin against various skin problems like fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and dryness. Also provides protection against different types of skin cancer, which can be fatal as people age.

Additionally, sunscreen protects important skin proteins like collagen, keratin, and elastin, which are necessary for preserving supple and healthy skin. Although the benefits of sunscreen may not be immediately visible, it is a wise decision for long-term skin care. This article offers more information on the factors to consider when choosing a sunscreen.

What to Consider in Selection

Choosing the right sunscreen for face protects your skin and maintains its overall health. Think about the following aspects before making a choice.

1. Sunscreen SPF

The sun protection factor (SPF) on a sunscreen label indicates its ability to protect against UVB rays that cause sunburns. While many people opt for higher SPF protection, experts have proven that SPF 15 sunscreen provides all the sun protection that skin requires. Once the rating exceeds SPF 15, the difference in protection is negligible.

Even so, using sunscreen with a high SPF rating can help guard against sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Experts recommend using at least an SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect against UVB and UVA rays.

This numerical rating system estimates how long you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned while wearing sunscreen. The higher the SPF number, the higher the protection, but it’s crucial to apply the sunscreen properly and reapply it every two hours.

2. Broad Spectrum Protection

It’s critical to comprehend the distinction between UVA and UVB rays in order to protect your skin from damaging sun rays. Sunburns are brought on by UVB rays, whereas premature aging of the skin can be brought on by UVA rays. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of radiation for the best defense.

UVB radiation exposure can thin the skin, increase the visibility of bruises, and cause peeling, swelling, and redness. Additionally, it may increase the risk of skin cancer and cause hives and itching. However, UVA rays are always present and are what cause sun damage, even in the shade or indoors.

UVB radiation levels intensify in hotter months, necessitating necessary measures such as finding shelter. However, UVA radiation is ubiquitous, so it’s crucial to employ broad-spectrum sunscreen for total protection. Bear in mind that both types of radiation can lead to severe health issues, including skin cancer, so always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

3. Water-resistant Formula

Water-resistant Formula

Nowadays, most sunscreens and sunblocks are not only waterproof but also water-resistant. This feature allows you to have fun in the water without risking sunburn and is especially important during summer when water activities and sweating are the norm.

With water resistance, the sunscreen remains effective while swimming or sweating for a certain duration, typically 40 or 80 minutes, as indicated on the label.

4. Skin Type and Sensitivity

Dr. Bucay, a dermatologist from San Francisco, recommends choosing a sunscreen that suits your skin type and the season. For naturally dry skin or during winter, opt for a moisturizing sunscreen containing shea butter or glycerin to combat dryness or a product with hyaluronic acid to retain water.

On the other hand, an oil-free or mattifying moisturizer is best for humid summer days, especially for those with oily skin. If you’re concerned about acne and discoloration, niacinamide, ceramides, and peptides can boost your sunscreen’s anti-aging properties.

For sensitive skin, she suggests a physical (mineral) sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that’s unlikely to irritate your skin. She also advises avoiding products with added fragrance, which can cause skin irritation.

Protect Your Skin With Daily Sunscreen Use

Using sunscreen in the morning as part of your daily routine and reapplying it during the day can benefit your skin. It helps safeguard your skin, maintain health, and lower the chances of serious skin issues. Additionally, consistent use of sunscreen can prevent noticeable damage in the long run.
