How to Choose Night Cream

A night cream should be part of your skincare routine. As the term suggests, it’s applied during the night before bed. Use it at least half an hour before sleeping to ensure that the product has set and penetrated the skin. During sleep, the cells regenerate to repair the damages obtained during the day. Using the right night cream can further aid with the regeneration. Plus, depending on the ingredients, it could treat various skin problems and promote healthier skin.

Not all night creams are the same. Moreover, people have different skin types and needs. So, a product may suit one person but not the other. The best night cream is the one that suits your skin and meets your requirements. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right night cream.

Consider your skin type

Every skin type has its own needs, so it’s vital to consider this when choosing your night cream or other skincare products to ensure their efficacy. For example, if you have oily skin, night creams that are non-greasy, light, and non-comedogenic are excellent choices. Non-comedogenic means that it doesn’t clog pores. Overproduction of oil could cause the pores to clog easily. Those with sensitive skin should choose a product that’s hypoallergenic and free from fragrance and parabens, as they can cause irritation.

Determine your skin concern

Night creams are also designed for various skin concerns. For instance, some products are made to prevent signs of premature ageing, such as dark spots, wrinkles, and fine lines, like the night creams offered. If you aim to have younger-looking skin and want to prevent these early signs of ageing, it’s an excellent option. However, since this product contains retinol, be cautious with its application, as the ingredient could irritate your skin if used excessively.

Allow at least two weeks for your skin to adjust before you use it daily. Within the first couple of weeks, apply only a small amount of the night cream every few days or every other day. Once your skin gets used to it, you can use it regularly.

Take age into consideration

It’s not just older people who may benefit from night creams, but younger ones too. However, the needs of every age group vary, so consider this when choosing your night cream. A light night cream that hydrates and nourishes is enough if you’re in your 20s. Products with anti-wrinkle ingredients are great choices if you are in your 30s. Look for a night cream that can rejuvenate and hydrate skin and boost collagen production if over 40s.

Check the ingredients

See if the ingredients are good for your skin type and concern. Retinol, citric acid, and propyl gallate are common ingredients of a good night cream. Again, consider your skin type, especially if you have sensitive skin, to avoid rashes or irritation.

It’s always a good habit to perform a patch test when trying a new product. First, apply a small amount on the skin to see if there’s an unwanted reaction. Then, you can start using the product in your skincare regimen.
