There are many reasons for wanting to improve your business’s working environment and they are all in the interest of the business in the long run. There is no doubt that a business that has a good working environment will have happy employees, happy employees mean larger outputs, better quality work, and therefore more funds being drawn back into the business via orders and higher employee retention rates.
#1 Keep communal areas clean and tidy
It is important, now more than ever before, to keep the communal areas of your business clean, tidy, and hygienic. There are a few good reasons why this should be done and that it should be the responsibility of your company.
- It will reduce the likelihood of pests infesting your building
- Highly improve your business’s environment and employee morale
- Cut down on the amount of sick time caused by the spread of viruses around your business site
Cleaning of the communal areas should be the responsibility of the employer. You should hire the services of a professional cleaner to ensure that cleaning is carried out to a high standard rather than expecting your workers to wipe areas down before and after they have used them, as many do not bother to carry out such actions leaving others and your business at risk.
#2 Regulate working temperature
With recent times very much in mind, you should make sure that your employees are able to work within a regulated temperature-controlled environment. This can be easily achieved by installing heating and air conditioning to make sure that your workers are warm enough in the winter months and cool enough in the summer months.
Workers slow down if they get too cold as well as if they find that they are excessively hot, this means that your business’s output could be a lot less than perfect if you do not take these factors into account.
#3 Provide good restroom facilities
Nobody likes a cold damp restroom that is located via one door from the shop floor or straight off the large communal office. Even though you probably do not want your employees spending any more time than needed in your restroom facilities, they should still be comfortable and with privacy. You should also make sure that there is a decent number of facilities available for your employees to use, for instance having just or two cubicles for over a hundred staff members is far from desirable.
#4 Deal with discrimination and Bullying
Of course, the working environment is more than bricks and mortar, and the facilities supplied therein. There is also the added and very serious presence of discrimination and bullying that can be found in many working establishments.
This can be even more damaging if those that are causing the problem are not brought into line by the business or managers and are allowed to continue. For many victims and aggressors talking about the issues of bullying or discrimination is not enough, as very soon after the fact the aggressor will start again either on the same victim or with a new one, knowing the worst that can happen to them is to have to sit in a room with that person and say that they are sorry.
