Phonchanok Srisunaklua: A nauseating clip of dead bats
Thai Youtuber Phonchanok Srisunaklua took her viewers on a nasty ride after she posted a revolting one-minute-40-second clip this week. In the particular clip, the viewers saw the YouTuber devouring a bowl. The bowl was full of dead bats swimming in a soup with cherry tomatoes.
In fact, Phonchanok was truly relishing the dish as we heard her calling the bats “delicious”. She even compared them to eating raw meat. At one point, we saw Phonchanok ripping the bats apart. She then went on to dip them in a spicy sauce called Nim Jam. Eventually she consumed them raw.
Indeed, we also saw her holding up a whole bat in front of the camera. She told the audience that it has teeth. After this, she began munching on the bat’s bones. In fact, we even heard her saying that the bones are soft. Not long after she posted the video, viewers’ comments filled her comment section. Disgusted and alarmed viewers even enquired about the health implications of ingesting a bat.
One anxious viewer linked the clip with the pandemic and damned her for attempting to start a pandemic. Let us tell you that bats contaminated with the closest relatives to Sars-Cov-2, which sparked the Covid-19 pandemic, abound in northern Thailand. We learn from Phonchanok that she got the bats from a market near the Laos border.
Terribly adverse effects of eating a bat on one’s health
The head of the wildlife health management group expressed his apprehension. He went on to say that this gross incident should not happen both in Thailand and around the world. Indeed, it is very hazardous and unsafe behaviour, especially because bats contain a lot of pathogens.
He also asserted that there is no evidence that immersing them in hot water would actually kill the germs. He further expressed his anxiety and reported that just touching the saliva, blood, and the skin is risky and dangerous. The authorities deleted the clip from her page and took her into custody for pulling this stunt.
Phonchanok Srisunaklua: An oath to never eat bats again…
Phonchanok Srisunaklua posted an apology video and pledged to never eat bats again. However, it was too late by that time. She faced imprisonment for possession of protected wildlife carcasses and for violating the Computer-Related Crimes Act of 2007. In fact, besides 5 years of staying behind the bars, she also has to pay a hefty fine of $13,800.
