wisdom teeth removal

Wisdom teeth are back molar, which are the last teeth to develop. This process happens during the ages of 17 to 23 years. While this process is pain-free for some people, others do not have enough space to accommodate the extra tooth, which leads to a plethora of problems. Some people may have to opt for wisdom teeth removal because they have not grown awkwardly and displaced the other teeth. Due to the limited space in the mouth, it is possible that they have built-in a wrong angle or do not have ample space to grow at all. In either of these cases, you will have to opt for surgical removal.

What Happens During Surgery

When it comes to wisdom teeth removal, there is absolutely nothing to worry. Many people have hailed this process as one of the most common procedures performed by dentists on adults. It is generally an outpatient surgery that lasts for 45 minutes at best. You will be able to get the operation and leave the hospital on the same day. If you require local anaesthesia, you will wake up in the same chair or may be shifted to another room. Either way, it is expected that you will not have a memory of what went along. After the anaesthesia wears off, you will be able to regain consciousness.

Tips For Easy Recovery

As wisdom teeth removal is so standard and well-practised, recovery from this surgery does not take much time or effort. However, you will come across some standard procedures and protocols that you have to follow to make the healing quick and effective. Here are some of the best tips that you must follow for the first three days after getting the surgery.

  • You are likely to experience some pain; you can apply moist heat on your jaw.
  • It is advised for you to use an ice pack to get rid of swelling or changes in your skin colour.
  • Eat soft food that does not require many chewing’s, such as milk, soup, and boiled pasta.
  • Make sure to take the prescribed drugs from time to time to reduce the pain.
  • Drink a lot of fluid during the healing period after wisdom teeth removal.
  • You can start brushing your teeth from the second day after the surgery.
  • However, you have to be extremely cautious and soft when brushing your teeth.
  • Make sure that you do not brush against any blood clots.
  • If your pain and swelling persist for more than three days with equal intensity or if you have developed a fever, you must immediately contact your physician.

Things To Stay Away From

Going through surgery like wisdom teeth removal is not a cakewalk. Before the surgery, usually, a patient experiences a lot of pain and trouble. You must take care of your teeth right after the surgery and make sure that the healing process is completed as soon as possible.

As for all operations, there are some things that you must stay away from after the surgery. One thing that people often tend to do is rinse their mouths quite often. Your doctor may have prescribed you to rinse your mouth with saltwater; however, you must remember to do this very gently. You should not use a straw after the surgery, because the sucking motion can loosen some blood clots. Eating hard and crunchy food will be challenging and painful. It is best to stay away from them. Finally, you must not smoke or consume alcohol after the surgery because this will slow down the healing speed.
