How do You Make Apple Cider Vinegar at Home?

Ingredients That You Need:

  • Apples or cores and peels of apples
  • Sugar or Honey
  • Water to cover
  • Yeast (optional)

Procedure For Making Apple Cider Vinegar Base

Procedure For Making Apple Cider Vinegar Base

1. Get The Best Flavored Apples and Clean Them Before Using:

Apples that are going to choose will decide the overall taste of the vinegar. Though it needs a lot of time to ferment and get the final ingredient vinegar, you need to choose the right-flavored apples. Thus, go for choosing the right quality apples available in the market to get the best apple cider vinegar as an output.

For a good taste, try a combination of different apples like sweet apples, sharp-tasting apples, etc. Also, you can try apple scraps instead of whole apples as one whole apple is equal to two apple scraps.

Before preparing the cider, you need to wash the apples cleanly using cold water. Thus, rinse the apples using cold water and scrub the outer skin. The number of apples that you use depends on how much vinegar you need from it. It is better to try using 3 apples for newbies.

2. Cut The Best Apples into Small Cube Sizes:

When you expose the apples to more surface area, you will get the vinegar fermentation. Now, it’s time to cut the apples into small cubes of 1-inch size. But never peel the skin of the apples before cutting. So allow the apples to get fermentation with their skin.

The main thing is the vessel that you use for apple fermentation. Avoid using stainless steel, as the acidity of the cider vinegar will damage the steel. Also, one may feel a metallic taste in the vinegar.

3. Cover The Apples with a Water Level:

Ensure that you are filling the apples with water completely to avoid getting rotten apples. When any apples are not covered with water, they will begin to rot and thus, spoil the whole vinegar itself. For good results, you can use either mineral or purified water to fill the apple jar.

For instance, consider you are using a quart jar with three apples in it, then you may need 800 milliliters of water to cover them. When you use less water, it will spoil the apples and if you use more water, it will weaker the vinegar taste.

4. For One Apple, Add One Teaspoon of Sugar and Close The Jar:

Since you are using three apples in this process, you can add 3 teaspoons of raw sugar into the apple jar and stir well. You can also use honey or other types of sugar to ferment into alcohol which turns the apple into apple cider.

Allow the mixture to turn into cider and then vinegar by covering the jar using a piece of cheesecloth. Place the cloth around the mouth of the jar and tighten it using a rubber band.

Procedure Involving The Vinegar Fermentation

Procedure Involving The Vinegar Fermentation

1. Protect The Jar Aside in a Warm and Dark Place and Stir Them Daily:

Find the best spot at your home where you can place the jar for the best fermentation. You need to protect the jar in your kitchen where there is no direct exposure to sunlight at all. Ensure that you are placing the jar at a room temperature of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 degrees Celsius.

Also, you should not leave the jar untouched after covering it using a cloth. But you need to stir the mixture at least once or twice a day to help the fermentation process. Use a wooden spoon to stir the cider once or twice during the first week.

2. Look for The Apples to Settle at The Jar’s Bottom and Strain The Apples:

After one or two weeks, you will see the apples settling down to the bottom of the jar. This is indicating the fermentation of the apples and they are no longer needed for the vinegar fermentation.

Now, use another piece of cheesecloth to strain the apples from the cider. Again, pour the cider back into the jar and cover using the same old cheesecloth, and store it in the same warm and dark place.

Apple Cider Vinegar has been a home remedy for everything that you need such as fighting germs to helping in heartburn control.

Now, you need to again follow the same old procedure of stirring the cider every 3 to 4 days. Over this time, fermentation of the cider happens and you may notice some change in the taste of the cider from sweet to the tangy aroma. This is a sign of the fermentation process. Allow it to ferment for a longer time to get a tasty, perfect apple cider vinegar.

4. Store The Fermented Apple Cider Vinegar in a Glass Jar:

After the fermentation process is over, you can transfer the apple cider vinegar into a glass jar and cover them with a lid. If you feel the vinegar is too strong, then you can add some water to dilute them.

Ensure that you are storing the apple cider vinegar at room temperature and it will continue the fermentation process. When you are using apple cider vinegar, ensure that you are closing the jar properly and storing it rightly.
